Content Marketing, Copywriting

Whether you love it or hate it there’s no denying that content marketing is one of the most effective ways of gaining more traffic and attracting customers to your business. Content marketing isn’t new, it’s been around since the printed word was first published hundreds of years ago. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the best tips for helping you can improve your content marketing efforts and ensure that the content you create works for your business.

Use a style guide

Take a look at the content that your business produces, from brochures and flyers to emails and your website and ask yourself is the tone of voice consistent? We’re willing to bet that in the majority of cases it won’t be. Creating a style guide will help to ensure that all of your written communications and content is consistent. The style guide doesn’t need to be over the top, but it should set guidelines for how your content should be written including any words, phrases or style of language that should and shouldn’t be used.

Create a content calendar

Do you find that you struggle to come up with ideas for new content and as a rule fail to keep your blog, social media or email campaigns up to date? A simple content calendar can help you take control and show you when things need to be created. You can also align this with business events such as trade shows, marketing events, product launches to help you create relevant and timely content that will help you achieve your business goals.

Evergreen content

Are you tired of creating great content only to find that it is outdated almost as soon as it is published? The key to building stronger and better performing content is to produce evergreen content as this will have a much longer shelf life compared to news-style articles. Evergreen content is simply content that is designed to be relevant for a long period of time. So, an article listing the 5 best gaming laptops in 2019 will quickly become out of date as new models hit the shelves while an article that covers 5 features that every gaming PC should have is likely to have a much longer shelf life as these features are likely to stay the same over a period of time e.g. Powerful processor, dedicated graphics card, etc.

Gap analysis

Want to know how to improve your content marketing efforts? Take a look on Google and use the search suggestions at the bottom of the search results to get an idea of potential search terms and topics that users are searching for the are related to keywords you’d like to target. Click on each of the terms and see what the first page results look like. For any question-based terms, you should find plenty of article style results and these are who you are trying to compete with. You’ll want to analyse each of the results on the first page making a note of how in-depth they are, key points they cover, article length and note down opportunities where you feel you could produce better content.

Refresh older content

One of the best ways to really get the most from your content marketing is by updating and refreshing older content. It is much easier to update existing content than it is to create new content so take the opportunity to refresh any blogs, how-to guides or other written content that has become out of date, this can help bring you a fresh source of traffic and give your content a lift.

As well as refreshing content another option is to repurpose existing content that has performed well. If you’ve written an awesome guide on how to build a gaming pc then why not use this to create a video or other form of media that can help you attract even more customers. Shareable resources are always a great win so if you can create something of value then your customers are going to share it for you.
